Agree with review below July 30, 2010 Jin <3 "Amazon" (Orlando, FL) Im not sure what kind of taste this is, but certainly not what i expected from the taste of bread.
Bland and dry July 6, 2010 Valthegal 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This bread is edible but I wouldn't say tasty, and I found it fairly bland, and it needs lots of help in the form of jelly, honey, peanut butter etc. I will finish what we ordered, but won't be ordering more of it.
I like this bread July 5, 2010 stay home mom I think this bread is worth the moeny. I am not used to that. i found myself eating less and less bread which is a good thing overall. i will keep the loaves to make breadcrumbs, veggie burgers and maybe a bread pudding. if you have to get a readymade bread, go for it. it's not terrible, but it's really different from the usual wheat bread that i now have to avoid. i think i will try my hand at making gluten free bread at home instead of relying on outside sources. i gave it 4 stars because though there were some things i didn't care for i still can see it used in other ways in the kitchen. when i recieved my bread i didn't realize how small the slices would be, but the size lends to appetizers or small sandwiches for kids. the bread itself has a sourdough taste to it which is cool, but it's really dry. it made me nervous about the bread that it had a long shelf life in a vacuum seal.
Hooray! Bread is back in my life! July 2, 2010 M. Lu (Los Angeles, CA) I didn't expect miracles. I justed wanted bread back into my life so that every now and then I could have a small piece with butter and jam for breakfast or two slices for a PB & J sandwich. Yep, it's the simple things that I've missed.
It was so frustrating watching people dive into bread baskets at the restaurants when I had to wait patiently for the salads and soups to arrive. But now I know that I can go home and have a piece of Ener-G Foods Light Brown Rice Loaf. And hey, it's almost as good as the real thing. "Almost" meaning I went from a 0% bread lifestyle to 100%. That's a big increase!!!
So, what's it like? Well, it's not yeasty... or wheaty... or bready. It doesn't have that rich grainy and buttery flavor like real bread. And when you toast it, it's not going to make your kitchen smell like a bakery. But it's pretty darn good especially when you haven't had bread in a long time. I had a breakfast sandwich this morning! What about you?
To reiterate what other reviewers have already pointed out... You need toast it. Even just slightly to heat it up. Then it will feel and taste like bread. Otherwise, it's more like cardboard. Don't blame the bread though. That is how rice starches work. Ever put left over rice in the refrigerator and then try to eat it the next day? Have you noticed that if you under-microwave the cold rice, it's hard and powdery? BINGO! It's the rice starches. They're cold. So just remember to toast the bread. A little for sandwiches or a lot to get it dark for butter and jam.
This weekend, I'm going to try grilled cheese and heck... maybe even FRENCH TOAST!!!
